Last night I saw Vertigo for the first time (for shame for shame), but what better place to see one of the most famous films set in SF than The Castro Theater. During the opening credits there was a lot of clapping for various names which I assumed was a result of the general festive atmosphere, but on closer inspection it seemed to be targeted reverence from the astute film buffs in the crowd. One of the names that garnered a lot of applause was Saul Bass, so I was happy to come across this gem on Blogdex today.
A couple of my favorite moments from the movie (all the famous scenes notwithstanding)… 1) Scotty (Jimmy Stewart) referring to the Mission as “skid row.” 2) The trippy dream sequence with fanciful abstract imagery and Scotty’s head flying through space on a backdrop of Spirograph-like drawings.
As an aside, Brad pointed out that Barbara Bel Geddes, who played the plucky brassiere designer/painter, Midge, died just last Monday.
Coincidentally, I got to work this morning and had a voicemail from one of my team who was at home sick with vertigo. No kidding.
