Sarah Vowell

Last night Kate and I went to see Sarah Vowell at the Herbst Theatre. We had upper upper balcony seats, so she looked pretty tiny sitting down on the stage (she's not a tall person to begin with). It wasn't really a conversation in the traditional sense. David Kipen, the host, would throw her a question and she would answer it and two or three more. She made his job easy. One of the things I found most interesting was her love of pop culture and history. She could effortlessly riff on President Garfield's reading habits or an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She's a strange bird, in the best way.

We also found out she is going to be the voice of Violet Parr, the daughter in a family of undercover superheroes, in Pixar's new film, The Incredibles.

Next up Gary Snyder in conversation with Garrison Keillor. It took me awhile, but I finally got clued in to City Arts & Lectures. They have great speakers and the tickets are usually only $12-$15. I'm still kicking myself for missing Steve Martin a couple years ago though.
